LINCOLN, Neb. – Simpson College came out firing from long distance making 11 first half 3-pointers as the storm handed the Nebraska Wesleyan women their first loss of the season, 108-73, in the Iowa Conference opener on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 2) at Snyder Arena.
NWU (5-1, 0-1 IIAC) fell behind 30-15 at the end of the first quarter, then Simpson outscored the Prairie Wolves by 20 points in the second quarter to hold a commanding 66-31 advantage at the break. Simpson was 11-19 on 3-point attempts in the first half and shot 65.7 percent overall as a team in the first 20 minutes. Meanwhile, NWU made only 35.3 percent of their first half shot attempts to goa along with 14 turnovers.
The Prairie Wolves cut into the lead in the third quarter but the lead was too much to overcome as Simpson went over the century mark to improve to 2-0 in IIAC play and 5-2 overall.
Simpson used a 13-0 run in the 1
st quarter to get up by 15 points with just over three minutes to play in the first period and NWU was never able to get back within single digits.
The Storm were only 2-12 from 3-point range in the second half and dropped below 50 percent in the final 20 minutes but still finished the game making well over half of their shots. Simpson shot 55.2 percent as a team for the game, compared to only 35.2 for the Prairie Wolves.
IIAC Player of the Week Noreen Morrow continued her strong inside play to lead the Storm posting a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds. Janey Botkins came off the bench to be the hot shooter from the outside. Botkins scored 19 points, making 6-11 from 3-point range.
Two other Simpson players scored in double figures in the game. Cameron Kincaid had 12 points and Victoria Hazard scored 11.
NWU was led by sophomore guard
Caitlin Navratil with 24 points on 10-15 shooting, making 4-6 on 3-pointer attempts. She also dished out a team-high three assists.
The only other player in double figures was
Kate Schulte with 10 points. Schulte also pulled down nine rebounds.
