LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska Wesleyan made quick work of Loras College on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 7) as the Prairie Wolves swept past the Duhawks 3-0 in IIAC volleyball action. NWU won in scores of 25-22, 25-16, 25-19.
The win was a much needed victory for the Prairie Wolves as they snap their seven match losing streak and pick up another conference win to stay alive for the postseason tournament. It was also a special day on Saturday as NWU celebrated their lone senior player,
Sidney Mell before the match.
Loras (9-12, 3-3 IIAC) was in control for most of the first stet building up a 14-10 lead. NWU rallied back and tied the match at 15-15. There were four more ties including 20-20 where the Prairie Wolves finally pulled away.
Hannah Bellinghausen had two straight kills, then
Karrie Sestak closed the set with an emphatic kill.
Nebraska Wesleyan jumped ahead 6-0 in the second set and never let Loras back into the match. The Prairie Wolves had 13 kills with only one error in set two for a .444 swing percentage.
The third set was more of the same with NWU getting ahead 6-0 and cruising to the win. Loras did put up a fight and battled back to pull within 19-19, but that was as close as they could get. Three straight Duhawk errors, then a free ball kill from
Kylie Sestak gave NWU set point. Once again
Karrie Sestak slammed the home match winner.
Kierra Harder led the team with 10 kills in the match.
Hannah Bellinghausen added eight kills as NWU finished with 32 total.
Kelsie Stovall dished out 30 assists and
Lizzie Saale had 13 digs.
Loras was led by Michelle Budden with 10 kills.
