LINCOLN, Neb. – Three first half goals by Wartburg College were too much to overtime as the Knights defeated Nebraska Wesleyan, 3-0, in IIAC women's soccer action on Saturday (Oct. 7) at Abel Stadium in Lincoln.
It was the first IIAC win of the year of the year for Wartburg as they improved to 1-1-2 in IAIC, while NWU drops to 1-3 in conference play and 4-7 overall. NWU is now in seventh place in the league standings with the top six qualifying for the postseason tournament.
Wartburg got the scoring started in the 26
th minute on an own goal that was kicked in by a Prairie Wolves player. They quickly scored again with Morgan Neuendorf scoring to put the Knights ahead by two.
The final goal of the match came in the 36
th minute as Katie Ives found the open net.
Neither team was able to score in the second half, and Nebraska Wesleyan was the more aggressive team. The Prairie Wolves had 15 total shot attempts with 10 shots in the second half. Only four of the shots were on goal, while eight of Wartburg's ten shots were on goal.
Nebraska Wesleyan will look to rebound on Tuesday night (Oct. 10) when they travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to face Coe College in a key conference match. The Kohawks are just one point ahead of the Prairie Wolves in the league standings.
