Disappointing Road Loss at Dubuque For Men's Soccer

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Nebraska Wesleyan's three-match winning streak came to a disappointing end on Wednesday night (Oct. 18) as the University of Dubuque shutout the Prairie Wolves 3-0 in Iowa Conference men's soccer action.

The road setback drops the Prairie Wolves down to 4-3 in IIAC play now sitting fourth in the league standings with only one match to play.  Dubuque improves to 3-2-1 in league play, right behind the Prairie Wolves in the standings.

Matheus Dos Santos got the scoring started for the Spartans in the first half as he connected on a shot from nearly 20 yards out in the 31st minute.  That goal gave Dubuque the early 1-0 advantage.  Neither team scored the rest of the way as both squads went to the locker room at halftime with Dubuque leading 1-0.

Things didn't get better for the Prairie Wolves in the second half.  Kyle Klatka got the hot hand for the Spartans scoring two goals in the second half.  His first goal came in the 49th minute off a corner kick early in the second half.  Klatka connected again in the 72nd minute, also on a corner kick to give the Spartans an advantage that was too much for NWU to overcome.

Dubuque was the aggressive team in the match with 22 total shots, including 11 shots on goal.  NWU had just eight shots and four on goal.  All four shots on goal were saved by Spartan goalkeeper Brandon White who recorded the shutout.

Nebraska Wesleyan still has their sights on getting a home match in the first round of the IIAC Postseason Tournament.  The Prairie Wolves will close out their regular season on Oct. 24 when they host Buena Vista University.
