LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska Wesleyan jumped ahead early but couldn't sustain the lead as Central College rallied back to defeat the Prairie Wolves, 2-1, in Iowa Conference women's soccer action on Saturday night at Abel Stadium.
Erin Manion scored a pair of goals for the Dutch in the victory as they improved to 12-2-1 overall and 3-1-1 in IIAC play to move into a tie for third place. Unfortunately for the Prairie Wolves, they drop to 4-9-1 overall and 1-5 in IIAC action and now sit in eighth place in the league standings on the outside looking in on the postseason with two matches remaining.
Raissa Souza had the Prairie Wolves looking good with early as she scored in the 8
th minute to put NWU ahead by one. Souza scored her fifth goal of the season of an assist by
Chelsea Chmura.
Central quickly responded less than four minutes later as Manion scored her first goal of the match to tie it at 1-1. The score would remain 1-1 at halftime as the two teams played an even first 45 minutes of soccer.
Manion struck again in the 55
th minute to give the Dutch the lead. This time she scored on an assist from Lauren Vahlkamp. That one goal advantage would prove to be enough for the Dutch as the Prairie Wolves were unable to tie it up.
NWU had only five shot attempts in the match and two in the second half as they were limited in their offensive attack.
Nebraska Wesleyan has a busy upcoming week as they will travel to Dubuque, Iowa on Wednesday to face the University of Dubuque in IIAC play, then turn around the very next day and face Grinnell College in a non-conference match at Abel Stadium.
