LINCOLN, Neb. – 8
th-ranked Wartburg College outscored the Nebraska Wesleyan women by 11 points in the 2
nd quarter to build up a double digit advantage and they would maintain that lead in a 61-50 victory in IIAC women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 21) at Snyder Arena.
The Prairie Wolves (8-8, 2-6 IIAC) made just 2-14 from the floor in the 2
nd period and were held without a point for the first 6:11 of the quarter as Wartburg kept adding to the lead. NWU trailed just 17-14 after one quarter, but the Knights held a 30-18 lead headed to the halftime locker room.
NWU made one last push late in the game with full court pressure in the final minutes and cut the lead to nine points with 1:30 remaining. Nebraska Wesleyan had a chance to cut the lead down even further but did not convert on the offensive end as the Knights got the victory.
It was a very cold shooting performance for the Prairie Wolves overall in the first half, shooting just 21.2 percent from the floor as a team and 2-14 from 3-point range. Wartburg was at 42.9 percent and only 3-14 from the 3-point line.
Nebraska Wesleyan ended the game with a season-low 50 points on 19-62 shooting a 3-24 from 3-point land.
Caitlin Navratil was the only Prairie Wolves player in double figures with 15 points on 6-9 shooting. The rest of the team made just 13 total field goals on the day.
Wartburg had three players in double figures led by Kristie Sommer with 16 points.
NWU will be busy next week with three road games starting on Monday at Central College in Pella, Iowa.
