Wolves Sweep Past Peru State in Softball Action

PERU, Neb. -- Nebraska Wesleyan battled windy conditions but still recorded a softball doubleheader sweep on Thursday afternoon (Apr. 7) as the Prairie Wolves won two games over Peru State.  NWU won the first game 2-1, then completed the sweep with a 7-2 win in game two.

The opening game was tightly contested as Peru State got out to a 1-0 lead after two innings.  Nebraska Wesleyan tied the game in the top of the 3rd inning.  Hunter Bailey was hit by a pitch then came around to score on an RBI single by Kassie Knauss.

Neither team was able to score over the next three innings as the game remained tied 1-1 headed to the final inning.

Pinch hitter Jade Hansen got a one out single to start the NWU offense.  She advanced to second on the next play and was there with two outs.  Hunter Bailey came through with the game-winning hit as she got an RBI single to left field for the victory.

NWU finished with seven hits in the game, all singles.  Jordan Arndt was the only player to record two hits.  Marisa Garver got the win on the mound, throwing a complete game allowing one run on four hits.

Peru State got ahead in game two the same way they did in the opening game.  The Bobcats plated one run in the bottom of the 1st on an error in the NWU outfield.

The Prairie Wolves finally got their offense going in the third inning.  Danelle Snyder singled and moved to third base on an error the following play.  Knauss singled to left field to drive in Snyder.  With the bases loaded and two outs, Madi Francis got a 2-run single to left field to put NWU ahead 3-1.

Another two out rally happened in the 5th inning as Jordan Arndt doubled down the left line, then scored on Francis double.  Madi came around to score on a single by Maddy Ethen.

Peru State put together three hits in the bottom of the 5th to score one run, but that was as close as they could get.  Brianne Conover doubled in the 7th inning for the Prairie Wolves to drive in two insurance runs.

Nebraska Wesleyan piled up 11 hits in the game, led by Kassie Knauss and Madi Francis who each were 2-4.  LeighAnn Novotny got the win on the mound with a complete game.  She allowed just five hits and two runs to improve to 4-1.
