Wolves Give Warriors First GPAC Loss of Season

FREMONT, Neb. -- Nebraska Wesleyan won game one of a GPAC softball doubleheader 4-3 over Midland University on Tuesday night (April 5) at Christensen Field in Fremont.  The Warriors came back to defeat the Prairie Wolves 10-1 in the nightcap.

The loss for the Warriors in game one was their first conference loss of the year and gave the Prairie Wolves their fourth straight win.  After NWU dropped game two, they move to 10-8 overall and 4-3 in GPAC play.

NWU jumped ahead 1-0 early in the first game as Rachel Kubik doubled in the 1st inning. Jordan Arndt singled as the next batter to drive in Kubik to give the Prairie Wolves the lead.

Neither team would score again until the bottom of the 5th inning when the Warriors tied the game. Midland loaded the bases with nobody out.  A single drove in one run, but NWU got out of the winning not allowing any additional runs.

Kassie Knauss led off the 6th inning with a single to get the Prairie Wolves offense going.  Kubik then walked to put the first two batters on base.  Madi Francis got a single to right field, that was then misplayed by the outfielder allowing two runs to score.  Francis would come around to score on another Warrior error giving NWU the 4-1 lead.

Midland loaded the bases again in the 6th inning.  The Warriors scored two runs to pull within one run at 4-3.  With the bases still loaded, NWU recorded a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning.

Neither team scored in the 7th inning as the Prairie Wolves held on for the win.

Marisa Garver improved to 7-3 on the season with the win on the mound.  Garver went 5 1/3 innings allowing two earned runs on 10 hits.  LeighAnn Novotny pitched the final 1 2/3 innings to record the save by not allowing a run.

Madi Francis and Kassie Knauss both had two hits to lead the NWU offense as the Prairie Wolves finished with seven hits.

Game two was close early as Midland led 2-0 after three innings.  NWU then got on the board in the top of the 4th inning.  Jordan Arndt and Madi Francis each singled, then Maddy Ethen walked to load the bases.  Nicole Belfiore grounded out to the third baseman to bring in Arndt.

That would be all the Prairie Wolves could get as they left two runners on base.  NWU would not threaten on offense again.

Meanwhile, Midland erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the 4th.  The Warriors got six straight hits and finished with eight in the inning.  They also took advantage of an NWU error as they ended the game early due to the run rule.

Nebraska Wesleyan had only four hits in the game.  Knauss had a double for the only extra base hit.

Claire Poppe took the loss for NWU allowing four runs on four hits in 3 1/3 innings.
