Late Inning Heroics for NWU Softball in Win Over Flames

LINCOLN, Neb. – Rachel Kubik got an RBI double in the top of the 8th inning to put the Prairie Wolves ahead and NWU would add another run as they rallied back to earn a 3-1 extra innings victory over College of Saint Mary in GPAC softball action on Friday night (Apr. 22) at University Place Park.

Friday's game was a makeup game as the second half of a doubleheader that was played on March 31 in Omaha was not finished.  The game was rescheduled for April 22 and NWU was the road team despite the game being played in Lincoln.

In a game between two teams that are battling for the final spot in the GPAC Postseason Tournament, CSM led 1-0 heading to the final inning.  In the top of the 7th inning, NWU got two singles to start the inning.  Madi Francis then tied the game with a single to drive in a run and make the score 1-1.  NWU held the Flames in the bottom of the inning to force extra innings.

The 8th inning got off to a great start for the Prairie Wolves as Betsy Reimer singled to start the inning.  She stole second base to get into scoring position.  Rachel Kubik then drove in Reimer with a double.  Kubik would eventually score on a single by Maddy Ethen.

Marissa Garver got the complete game victory on the mound to earn her 9th win of the season.  Garver pitched 8.0 solid innings allowing one run on seven hits.  She struck out four and didn't walk any on the night.

The Prairie Wolves, who had been held to just two runs in their previous 28 innings, had three players with multi-hit games.  Ethen, Francis and Nicole Vana all had two hit games.  Kubik had the only extra base hit of the game as she tied the school record for career doubles.

Nebraska Wesleyan also won the first game against the Flames in extra innings as they won 9-7 in 9 on March 31.

NWU improved to 15-14 overall and 7-9 in GPAC play as they now sit in 7th place in the league standings.  The Prairie Wolves have very little time to celebrate as they travel to Dakota Wesleyan on Saturday for a doubleheader against the Tigers.  DWU has set a school record with 31 wins already this season as they are third in the GPAC.
