Bardsley Buries Broncos in Big Performance

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Senior Trey Bardsley stole the show on Wednesday as he tied his career-high with 48 points to give Nebraska Wesleyan a 108-96 victory over Hastings College in an important GPAC men's basketball game at Snyder Arena.

Bardsley missed only three shots the entire night as he was 16-19 from the floor and 7-10 from 3-point range.  He scored 35 of his 48 points in the 2nd half, using long range 3-pointers and dazzling layups at the basket to bring the crowd to their feet.  He also scored 48 points last season against Northwester, which is the second highest total in school history.

Despite the big night from Bardsley, the game was still in doubt for most of the night.  The lead changed 11 times and was tied 11 teams.  At halftime the score was tied 47-47 as both teams were shooting big from the floor with the Prairie Wolves making 57.7 and the Broncos 54.5.

In the second half, Hastings led 51-50 within the first minute of the first half but five quick points by Bardsley put the Prairie Wolves ahead and they never trailed again.  The lead stayed within single digits the entire first 10 minutes of the first half.

A layup by Kendall Ferguson with 9:39 to play made the score 74-73 in favor of NWU.  From there, the Prairie Wolves went on a quick 6-0 spurt to pull away.  Two minutes later, they added a 7-0 run to get up by 12 points with just over five minutes to play.

Bardsley made three consecutive 3-pointers during that run and added two more layups for 13 points during a stretch of under four minutes.

With the victory, Nebraska Wesleyan improves to 17-6 overall and 12-55 in GPAC play to remain alone in 2nd place in the league standings with three games to play.  They continue to add to their win total and have now set the most GPAC victories ever for a team.

Not to be overshadowed, it was also a monumental day for senior forward Travis Giesselmann.  He had a huge 1st half scoring 20 points to reach the 1,000 point plateau for his career becoming the 36th player in NWU history to score over 1,000 points.  Giesselmann finished with 25 points, nine rebounds and five assists on the night.

NWU shot 73.1 percent in the 2nd half making 19-26 from the field in the final 20 minutes.  They shot 65.4 percent from the field for the game and made 51.9 percent from 3-point land.  It was the 11th time this season that the Prairie Wolves scored over 100 points and the 21st time in two seasons under Coach Dale Wellman.

Hastings shot 57.1 percent for the game and 60.0 percent in the 2nd half.  Rich Williams came off the bench to score a career-high 30 points to pace the Broncos.  Connor Musiel added 22 points.

Nebraska Wesleyan will play their final regular season home game on Saturday (Feb. 13) as the host Dordt College on Senior Day.  Tip-off is set for 4 pm.
