LINCOLN, Neb. -- Six Nebraska Wesleyan men's basketball seniors stepped off the Snyder Arena court with smiles on their faces as the Prairie Wolves held on to defeat Dordt College 92-87 in GPAC Men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 13) on Senior Day.
With the victory, Nebraska Wesleyan remains in 2nd place in the GPAC standings at 13-5 in conference play and improves to 18-6 overall. Dordt has lost eight of their last nine games to fall to 13-15 and 8-11.
The game wasn't decided until the final seconds. NWU had the ball up just one point in the final minute of the game.Â
Trey Bardsley held the ball until the shot clock ran down and drove the lane where he connected on a floater with 45 seconds left to put NWU ahead 88-85.   On the other end, Dordt missed a 3-pointer and
Travis Giesselmann secured the rebound. He was fouled and calmly nailed two free throws to make it a two possession game.
Dordt made to free throws on their end to make the score 90-87 with 17 seconds left. The Defenders were forced to foul and sent Giesselmann to the line with 10 seconds remaining. Once again Giesselmann nailed both free throws to secure the victory.
NWU built up a 16-point lead in the first half as they had all the momentum. Dordt chipped away and cut the lead to 51-42 at halftime.
In the second half, the Defenders kept getting closer and eventually tied the game at 72-72 with 8:19 remaining. They took the lead on a layup from Andrew O'Donnell at the 6:11 mark in a 76-75 lead. Over the next three minutes the Prairie Wolves went on a 7-2 run to get ahead by four points and they were able to hold one.
A big reason for Dordt to outscore the Prairie Wolves was the Defenders domination on the glass. Dordt held a huge 57-31 advantage on the glass, including 21 offensive rebounds. They scored 20 second chance points compared to only four for NWU.
NWU finished the game shooting 46.5 percent from the floor, making just 10-37 from 3-point range. Dordt shot 45.8 percent and made only four 3-pointers.
Senior
Trey Bardsley led the way for Nebraska Wesleyan with 25 points. Bardsley didn't have his best shooting day going 9-20 from the floor and 4-11 from 3-point range, but he also added four assists and four rebounds. Fellow senior
Travis Giesselmann was just behind Bardsley with 24 points and eight rebounds.
Two other NWU players reached double figures as
