MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – A 8-0 run to start the 4
th quarter put the Nebraska Wesleyan University women's basketball team up by 12 points and they would hold on for their third win of the season with a 66-57 win at Cornell College on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 26) in Mount Vernon, Iowa.
The Prairie Wolves have now won three straight games to improve to 3-1 overall. It marks the first three game winning streak for a NWU women's basketball team since the 2011-12 season.
NWU came out fast and jumped ahead 14-8 after the first quarter, holding the Rams to just 26.7 percent shooting from the field in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Prairie Wolves extended their lead making 8-18 from the floor, including two 3-pointers to put up 19 second quarter points and hold a 33-22 halftime lead.
Cornell started to chip away in the third quarter and made a big run to tie up the game. After NWU got up 40-28, the Rams scored 12 unanswered points over a stretch of three minutes to tie the game at 40-40. Cornell was never able to take over the lead as NWU remained ahead to close the quarter with a 48-44 advantage as
Caitlin Navratil made a basket at the buzzer.
Navratil opened the fourth quarter with a basket then back-to-back 3-pointers from
Tarin Van Slyke and
Audra Thramer got the Prairie Wolves back ahead by 12 points. Cornell got within seven points with 1:15 left in the game, but that was as close as they would get.
Nebraska Wesleyan had four players reach double figures in scoring as they improved their overall shooting to hit 45.0 percent from the floor.
Addie Wetzel had a team-high 20 points with seven rebounds.
Audra Thramer came off the bench to pour in 16 points, making four 3-pointers.
Caitlin Navratil scored 13 points and
Kate Schulte added 11 points.
