STORM LAKE, Iowa – Two second half goals gave the Nebraska Wesleyan men's soccer team a 2-0 win at Buena Vista University for their first ever Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory on Wednesday night (Oct. 5).
In a matchup of two IIAC teams looking for their first conference win of the 2016 season, it was the Prairie Wolves that took control and showed they are ready to make their move up the league standings. NWU is now 5-3-3 overall and 1-2 in Iowa Conference play with both IIAC losses coming to nationally ranked opponents.
The first half of Wednesday's match saw both teams getting a feel for the game with few shot attempts and no goals. The teams entered the locker room at halftime tied at 0-0.
In the second half, the Prairie Wolves ramped up their offensive attack with 15 total shots in the period.
Brady Blazek got the scoring started for Nebraska Wesleyan as he found the goal just over three minutes into the second half. Blazek's goal in the 48
th minute put the Prairie Wolves up 1-0.
Later in the half,
Drew Miller gave Nebraska Wesleyan an insurance goal as he scored in the 75
th minute to give the Prairie Wolves extra cushion and they preserved the victory.
NWU ended the match with 20 total shots, compared to only four for Buena Vista.
Jack Nespor posted a shutout in goal for the Prairie Wolves with two saves.
The three-match road trip for the Nebraska Wesleyan men will continue on Saturday with a trip to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to face Coe College.
