Storm Spoil Senior Soccer Night

LINCOLN, Neb. – Simpson College spoiled Nebraska Wesleyan's senior night celebration as the Storm came into Abel Stadium and upset the Prairie Wolves 2-1 in Iowa Conference women's soccer action on Wednesday night (Oct. 19).

It was the first IIAC win of the year for Simpson as they entered the night with a 1-10-3 overall record and 0-5 mark in the league.  The loss drops the Prairie Wolves to 6-9-1 and 2-4-1 in IIAC play with one conference match remaining.   NWU sits in fifth place in the IIAC standings as the top six teams make the postseason tournament.

Simpson struck first with Mackenzie Stump getting her initial goal of the year in the 10th minute on an assist from Payton Atwood. That goal was also the first for the Storm against an IIAC opponent as they had been shutout in their previous five matches.

The 1-0 lead would hold up through intermission as the Prairie Wolves were unable to get anything going in the first half.

In the second half, NWU began to get on the attack to put the pressure on the Storm. However, it was Simpson that once again scored as Maddie Thomas fired a shot from 20 yards out that got past Madi Francis in the goal to give the Storm a 2-0 advantage.

Needing to score fast, NWU pushed forward and finally got on the board in the 73rd minute.  Katelin Blosser sent a perfect corner kick to the front of the goal as Hallie Schimenti controlled the ball and found the back of the net.

That was as close as NWU could get as all their last minute attempts weren't completed giving the Storm their first conference win.

The disappointing result dampened the post-game senior day celebration as the Prairie Wolves honored the four seniors Megan Witcig, Hallie Schimenti, Madi Francis and Katelin Blosser.  All four played their final match at Abel Stadium.

NWU will close out conference play on Saturday with a match at Wartburg College, then finish the regular season the following day at Cornell College.
