LINCOLN, Neb. – Luther College had won every women's soccer conference match of the season heading into Lincoln on Sunday (Oct. 16), but that streak was halted as Nebraska Wesleyan played the Norse to a 1-1 draw at Abel Stadium.
With the draw against the IIAC leader, Nebraska Wesleyan moves into fifth place in the league standings with two matches remaining. The top six teams earn a spot in the conference postseason tournament.
Nebraska Wesleyan got on the board first when
Katelin Blosser scored her fourth goal of the year to put the Prairie Wolves up 1-0. Blosser used an assist from
Kaitlyn Sullivan to find the open net and give NWU the advantage.
The 1-0 lead would hold up through intermission as the Prairie Wolves were in position to knock off one of the league's top teams.
Luther responded in the 2
nd half as Marta Springer found the goal to make the score 1-1 in the 54
th minute.
The Norse remained on the attack the remainder of the second half, but the NWU defense held strong and did not break. Regulation ended with both teams tied 1-1 sending the match to overtime.
In the first overtime period, Luther had three shot attempts and NWU had one but none found the goal forcing the match to go an additional ten minutes. The second overtime proved to be more of the same with both teams defenses not allowing their opponents to score as the match ended in a draw.
Luther outshot NWU 24-7, but the Prairie Wolves held strong recording 12 total saves in the match.
Nebraska Wesleyan now enters their final week of IIAC regular season action by hosting Simpson College on Wednesday and traveling to Wartburg College Saturday.
