PELLA, Iowa – Central College ended Nebraska Wesleyan's conference winning streak as the Dutch defeated the Prairie Wolves 3-2 in Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer action on Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 11) in Pella, Iowa.
The Dutch got out to a 2-0 lead and that proved to be too much for the Prairie Wolves to overcome in the match between two solid IIAC programs.
Central scored the only goal of the first half in the 34
th minute as Logan Hoefer lit up the scoreboard making the score 1-0. That would be the score at intermission as neither team scored in the final ten minutes of the half.
Halfway through the second half the Dutch struck again in the 66
th minute to go up 2-0. Just 21 seconds later the Prairie Wolves go their first goal of the match.
Brady Blazek scored his fifth goal of the year on an assist from
Jake Kennedy to cut the score in half.
NWU battled to try to tie the match up, but it was Central that added the next goal. Salvador Villanueava found the back of the net in the 74
th minute giving Central a two-score lead.
Drew Miller did score another goal for the Prairie Wolves with less than 10 minutes remaining, but that was as close as the Prairie Wolves would get.
Nebraska Wesleyan falls to 6-4-3 overall and now goes to 2-3 in Iowa Conference action with three conference matches to play. Central improves to 9-4 and 3-1 in league play.
The Prairie Wolves return home on Sunday to host Luther College at Abel Stadium.
