NWU Women Battle #15 Broncos in 58-50 Loss

HASTINGS, Neb. -- The Nebraska Wesleyan women were within striking distance in the final minute against nationally-ranked Hastings College but in the end it was the 15th-ranked Broncos holding on for a 58-50 win over the Prairie Wolves in GPAC women's basketball action.

Hastings (12-4) snaps their four-game losing streak, but it wasn't easy against the Prairie Wolves.  The Broncos jumped out to an early 8-0 lead and looked like they would cruise all night.

NWU slapped on a zone defense and caused Hastings all sorts of troubles shooting the basketball.  The Broncos attempted 26 total 3-pointers in the game, hitting only five for 19.2 percent.

The Prairie Wolves shot 50 percent in the second half and made a late run to give the Broncos a scare.  Kelly Sanchez hit a pull-up jump shot with 3:23 remaining to make the score 53-49 in favor of the Broncos.  HC responded by nailing a 3-pointer on their end of the floor to go back up by seven points.

Felicia TeKolste hit 1-2 at the free throw line with 2:22 to play making the score 56-50.  NWU then got a pair of stops on defense with chances to get closer.  Two straight steals by the Bronco defense ended those threats.

With Hastings attempting to run out the clock, they missed a shot and NWU had a run out on the rebound.  TeKolste was streaking down the court for a layup but got tangled up and traveled to end the chances.

Felicia TeKolste finished the night with a game-high 22 points to lead all scorers.  She was 5-11 from the field and also recorded four steals.  She was the lone NWU player to reach double figures.

NWU ended up with a rebounding edge in the game, but the big stat was 16 offensive rebounds for Hastings.

The Broncos were led by Teeka Thompson who scored 13 points.
