SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- 4th-ranked Briar Cliff University extended their winning streak to a school record 17 games as the Chargers shot past the Prairie Wolves 100-71 on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 23) in a meeting between the top two teams in the GPAC men's basketball standings.
Briar Cliff improves to 21-2 overall and 12-1 in GPAC action, with NWU falling to 13-5 and 8-4 in the conference. The Prairie Wovles remain in second place in the conference standings.
The Chargers beat Nebraska Wesleyan at their own game as BCU nailed 19 3-pointers in the contest shooting over 50 percent from beyond the arc. BCU was 19-36, compared to NWU hitting just 7-34 from 3-point land.
Nebraska Wesleyan trailed by 18 points at halftime 53-35 after falling behind by as many as 22 points in the first half. The tough long range shooting continued in the next 20 minutes for the Chargers as they remain in 1st place in the GPAC standings.Â
NWU never got into rhythm against the top scoring defense in the conference. BCU forced the Prairie Wolves into 16 turnovers and held NWU to 40 percent shooting.
It was Clay Harreld that stole the show for Briar Cliff as he had a game-high 31 points, making 8-15 from 3-point land. Harreld, who was held to single digits in the first meeting between the two teams, was nearly unstoppable on Saturday afternoon. He was far from a one man show as four total Chargers reached double figures in scoring. Bryan Forbes had 17 points with three 3-pointers, Shane Graves score 13 points with eight assists and Austin Leffler scored 11.
For NWU, just two players scored in double figures as they were held 26 points under their season scoring average. Senior
Trey Bardsley scored a team-high 23 points, but was 2-9 from 3-point range. The only other player in double figures was
Keithan Karn who scored 16 points.
