FREMONT, Neb. -- Midland University held Nebraska Wesleyan over 30 points under their scoring average as the Warriors shut down the Prairie Wolves in a 92-63 victory in GPAC men's basketball on Wednesday night (Jan. 27) at the Midland Event Center in Fremont.
NWU was held to a season-low 63 points, which equals their lowest total in the Coach
Dale Wellman era. The Prairie Wolves had been held to a season-low 71 points on Saturday against Briar Cliff, then were limited to just 63 on Wednesday.
Midland beat NWU at their own game as they used hot outside shooting in the victory. The Warriors were 13-22 from 3-point land hitting 59.1 percent from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, NWU made a season-low six 3-pointers in the game as they hit 20.7 percent from long range.
The Warriors hit a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer to make the lead 46-32 at the half. NWU tried to take away the Midland strong inside presence by playing a zone defense in the first half, but the Warriors responded by making 9-14 from 3-point land in the first 20 minutes.
NWU got within 13 points early in the 2nd half, but that is as close as they could get with Midland continuing to pull away. The Warriors hit over 61 percent from the floor in the second half as they cruised to the win and snapped their 3-game losing streak.
The Prairie Wolves fall to 3rd place in the GPAC standings as they have their first two-game losing streak on the year. NWU is now 13-6 overall and 8-5 in GPAC action.
Trey Bardsley was one of two NWU players to score in double figures as he scored 19 points.Â
Travis Giesselmann had 13 points and seven rebounds, but shot just 3-15 from the floor.
Jesse Jones had a huge double-double for Midland scoring 33 points with 10 assists. Jones was one of three Warrior players with at least three 3-pointers. Nolan Cass made six 3-pointers for 18 points, and Ky Kramer hit four 3-pointers for 12 points.
NWU will try to respond on Saturday as they host Northwestern College at Snyder Arena.
