WICHITA, Kan. --
Ben Green passed for two touchdowns and ran for another in his debut as starting quarterback as he led Nebraska Wesleyan to a 27-17 upset victory over #21 Friends University in the 2015 season opener for Prairie Wolves football.
NWU and Friends were tied 10-10 at halftime but Green connected on two long touchdown passes in the third quarter to put the Prairie Wolves up by two scores. The first TD came on a 45-yard pass to
Ryan Larsen as he got past his defender and waltz into the end zone. The second came on a 56-yard pass to
Joel Wiedel as Green scrambled out of the pocket and hit Wiedel on a dump pass then he rambled down the sideline.
Friends responded with a 65-yard drive to close out the 3rd quarter. Kris Denton capped the drive with a 2-yard TD run to make the score 24-17.
Both teams traded possessions in the 4th quarter before
Dakota Buss intercepted a pass for the Prairie Wolves giving them the ball at the 33 yard line. NWU made a long methodical drive into Friends territory and got into Falcon territory. With 2:22 remaining,
Kramer Rath connected on a 43-yard field goal to seal the victory.
NWU got onto the board on their first drive of the year as Green rushed for a 6-yard TD run. Rath added a 30-yard field goal in the first half to account for the scoring.
Green finished his day going 16-29 for 315 yards with two touchdowns and just one interception. The Prairie Wolves finished with 385 total yards on the day.
Ryan Larsen caught three passes for 122 yards and a TD with
Joel Wiedel finishing with four catches for 91 yards and a score.Â
Shaka Taylor led the ground attack with 26 yards on 17 carries.
The NWU defense limited Friends to 260 yards (129 on the ground and 131 in the air.).Â
Russel Beard led the way with 10 total tackles, while
Brandon McGill had nine tackles.Â
