SIOUX CITY, Iowa - 3rd-ranked Morningside College scored a touchdown on the third play of the game and that was the first of 11 touchdowns on the day as the Mustangs defeated Nebraska Wesleyan 86-10 in the GPAC opener for both teams.
The 86 points allowed are the second most points ever allowed by a NWU football team, three more points than Morningside scored against the Prairie Wolves one year ago. Morningside has scored 163 points in their first two games of the 2015 season, after setting the NAIA record for points last year.
NWU got off to a rough start as they fumbled the opening kickoff to give Morningside the ball at the 21 yard line. 15 seconds later the Mustangs found the end zone. After stopping the Prairie Wolves on their possession, Morningside marched 52 yards in five plays to add the next score. In all, Morningside scored 27 points in the first quarter and held a 62-3 lead at halftime.
One bright spot in the first half for the Prairie Wolves occurred early in the game.Â
Arlie Myers blocked a Morningside field goal attempt and returned the ball into Mustang territory. That set up a field goal attempt as
Kramer Rath made a career-long 47-yard field goal to make the score 14-3. Rath has now made 10 straight field goals.
Morningside's offense scored a touchdown on all but two possessions in the first half. The defense also got into the scoring act as they returned two interceptions for touchdowns in the first half.
Nebraska Wesleyan came out in the second half and saw
Hunter Hand sack the Mustang QB and force a fumble that he recovered. The Prairie Wolves offense responded with their only touchdown of the game as
Ben Green found
Ryan Schneider for a 2-yard TD reception on 4th down.
Morningside added three more touchdowns and a field goal in the second half. The Mustangs finished with 687 yards of total offense, holding NWU to 145 yards. Morningside had 425 yards through the air and 262 on the ground.
For Nebraska Wesleyan,
Ben Green was 10-25 passing for 54 yards with three interceptions and one touchdown.Â
Joel Wiedel was the workhorse for the NWU offense with 60 yards on 22 carries.
Tanner Boggs led the NWU defense with 10 total tackles.
