MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The Nebraska Wesleyan women's soccer team split a pair of matches over the weekend in Milwaukee. NWU defeated Roosevelt University 4-1 on Saturday morning then lost to the host school Cardinal Stritch 5-2 on Sunday.
Against Roosevelt, NWU trailed 1-0 early before scoring four unanswered goals.
Georgia Straka got the scoring going for the Prairie Wolves as she tied the match at 1-1 in the 34th minute off an assist by
Annemarie Becker. Becker then gave NWU the lead with a goal right before intermission to make the score 2-1 at the break.
Within the first five minutes of the second half, NWU had scored two more goals to put the match away.
Natalie Graves scored the first goal of the second half then
Bella Carnazzo capped off the scoring with a goal of her own.
Sunday's match was against a very formidable opponent in undefeated Cardinal Stritch. CSU moved to 5-0 with the 4-2 victory on Sunday.
Cardinal Stritch scored the first two goals of the match to take an early 2-0 lead. The first goal of the match came only 1:17 into the match. NWU would come back and tie the match up before intermission.
Natalie Graves used an assist from
Katelin Blosser to get the Prairie Wolves first goal of the year in the 15th minute.
Kori Fink tied the match at 2-2 with a goal on an assist by
Maggie Bianco in the 43rd minute to send the match to 2-2 at intermission.
Cardinal Stritch flexed their muscle in the second half with three more goals to earn the win. NWU had seven shots on the day, compared to 20 for Cardinal Stritch.
"Overall it was an ok weekend for us. We were outstanding yesterday again Roosevelt, and learned important lessons today about our need to execute and focus from the first minute," Coach Flintham stated. "We are still embryonic as a team and know that we'll have a lot of good days ahead if we can find that focus."
NWU will have their home opener on Wednesday night when they host Simpson College.
