PELLA, Iowa -- A new era of Nebraska Wesleyan men's soccer was ushered in with a victory as the Prairie Wolves opened the 2015 season with a 3-1 win at Central College.
The win came under the direction of new head coach
Tudor Flintham. Flintham guided the Prairie Wolves to a dominant second half performance as NWU scored all three goals in the final 45 minutes.
NWU had 12 shot attempts in the first period, compared to just three for Central College. However, none of the goals were able to find the open net making the score 0-0 at intermission.
Team's barely had a chance to get back on the field in the second half when Central took the early lead. Bryce Leonard converted a goal only 20 seconds into the second period giving the Dutch a 1-0 advantage.
NWU got their first goal of the season ten minutes later as
Brady Blazek put the Prairie Wolves on the scoreboard. Blazek's goal tied the match at 1-1.
Junior
Drew Miller scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 67th minute for the Prairie Wolves as he was able to control a ball in the box and find the open net. With less than three minutes remaining in the match, the Prairie Wolves added one more goal.
Jake Kennedy used a cross from
Christian Healy to get his first collegiate goal and make the final score 3-1.
"We are an attacking and progressive team who prides ourselves on dictating the tempo of games and having our team personality visible and dominant," Coach Flintham said. "To be honest we did that throughout the game but just took a little time to find that final cutting edge. We'll improve from this, but the reaction was what most pleased me. They believe in each other, they believe in our vision and identity as a team, and that we can compete with any team out there".
NWU ended the match with 24 total shot attempts. Kennedy and Miller combined to have 17 of those shots, with eight of them on goal. Central had eight shot attempts in the match.
Christian Lomax played the first period in goal with
Jack Nespor taking the final 45 minutes as goalkeeper for the Prairie Wolves.
Nebraska Wesleyan will make their home debut on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 5) as they host North Central College at Noon in Abel Stadium.
