FREMONT, Neb. -- In a night that saw the Nebraska Wesleyan softball team score 22 total runs and allow a seven run disappear the Prairie Wolves came away with a pair of victories over Midland University in GPAC action. NWU won game one 9-2, then held on for a 13-11 victory in a wild contest in the nightcap.
NWU scored six runs in the top of the 7th inning to break open a 3-2 game in the first game of the night. The Prairie Wolves used a pair of errors to begin the inning then used a pair of walks to continue the inning.
There were some big hits in the inning as
Hunter Bailey hit a run scoring double with
Brittany Gentry and
Rachel Kubik each collecting two-run singles.
NWU finished the game with nine hits, compared to 10 hits for the Warriors. The Prairie Wolves took advantage of nine walks in the game, while striking out 12 times.
Rachel Kubik led the Prairie Wolves offense going 3-5 with a double and three RBI.
Game two got off to a great start for the Prairie Wolves. NWU had three runs in the top of the 1st as Kubik hit a two-run single and
Betsy Reimer got a run in on a squeeze bunt. Midland responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-2 after one inning of play.
The 3rd inning was one of the highest scoring innings of the season as the two teams combined for 12 runs.
Nebraska Wesleyan had seven hits in the 3rd inning as seven of the first eight batters recorded hits. The only out in the stretch was a sacrifice fly. The biggest hit of the inning was a two-run double by
Kassie Knauss.
With a 9-2 lead, things looked good for the Prairie Wolves heading to the bottom of the inning. That lead didn't last as the Warriors got six runs of their own on four hits and two errors.
Midland then scored three runs in the bottom of the 5th inning as they took a 11-9 lead scoring nine unanswered runs.
NWU came back strong in the top of the 6th inning as three hits and two costly errors allowed the Prairie Wolves to plate three and regain the lead. Kubik hit a double and scored on an RBI single from
Madi Francis.
The key play of the game came in the bottom of the 6th inning. NWU led 12-11 and Midland's first batter Samantha Hislop hit a deep drive to center field. NWU outfielder
Kassie Knauss made the catch then fell over the fence and lost the ball out of her glove. The umpire ruled the play as an out so the Prairie Wolves maintained the lead. NWU got an insurance run in the 7th inning and got the 13-11 victory.
The Prairie Wolves had 16 total hits as five NWU players had multiple hits in the game.Â
Rachel Kubik was a perfect 4-4 with two RBI, while
Betsy Reimer was 3-3 with two RBI.Â
Brittany Gentry went 3-4 with three runs scored and
Madison Ethen was 2-4 with an RBI.
Marisa Garver pitched the final 2 1/3 innings to get the victory as she earned the win in both games to improve to 5-5 on the year.
