CRETE, Neb. -- A throwing error in the top of the 9th inning gave Nebraska Wesleyan a 5-4 extra innings victory over Doane College in game one of the final GPAC baseball doubleheader of the season on Saturday. The Tigers came back to win game two, 7-2.
Nebraska Wesleyan finished the 2015 season with a 11-25 overall record and 7-13 mark in the GPAC as they missed qualifying for the GPAC Postseason Tournament.
Sam Ayars led off the top of the 9th inning with a double down the left field line. He moved to third b base on a flyout and was still standing on third with two outs.Â
Aaron Ochsner bunted and the third baseman lost his footing and overthrew the base to allow the run to score.
Relief pitcher
Jordyn Johnson got the final three outs in the bottom of the 9th as the Prairie Wolves got the victory and prevented the Tigers from winning the GPAC regular season championship.
NWU got on the board in the 1st inning as
John Estudillo and
Matt Orozco hit back-to-back doubles to take a 1-0 lead. Doane then scored three unanswered runs to lead 3-1 heading into the 6th inning.
Ochsner doubled to lead off the 6th inning then
Connor Bool got a infield bunt single. On a sacrifice bunt attempt from
Chase Powers the Doane pitcher threw the ball away allowing a run to score. Orozco then singled to score Bool and
James McKain hit a sacrifice fly to put the Prairie Wolves ahead 4-3.
Doane trailed by one run with two outs in the 7th inning when they mounted a rally. Two walks put the tying run in scoring position then Kevin Clausen singled to tie the game. With the winning run at third base, Johnson got Jake Smith to pop up in the infield to send the game to extra innings.
Johnson got the win to improve to 4-5 on the year. He pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief and did not allow a hit.Â
Matt Schommer started the game and gave up three earned runs on 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Matt Orozco was the only NWU player with multiple hits going 2-3 with two RBI.
Nebraska Wesleyan managed just four hits in the second game as they lost 7-2. Doane scored two runs in the 1st inning then the Prairie Wolves tied the game at 2-2 in the 4th. A throwing error by the pitcher allowed the first run to score then
Justus Stocks grounded out to bring in
Joe Babic. That would be the only two runs of the game for NWU.
Doane pitchers Tyler McKee and Andrew Hodges gave up just four hits with six strikeouts in the game.
