SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- Entering Thursday's GPAC softball doubleheader the Nebraska Wesleyan softball team was tied for second place and controlled their own destiny to host the GPAC Postseason Tournament. Last place Briar Cliff spoiled those chances as the Chargers took both games of the doubleheader winning 1-0 and 6-1.
With the two losses, NWU dropped all the way down to a tie for fifth place in the league standings. The Prairie Wolves have lost four straight to fall to 17-19 overall and 10-8 in GPAC play.
Nebraska Wesleyan managed just three hits in game one against the Chargers. Hannah Hustad pitched a complete game 3-hit shutout for Briar Cliff in the pitchers dual victory.
The Chargers got the lone run of the game in the 3rd inning as Abby Thomsen doubled and came around to score on a single. That would be the lone run scored on the afternoon.
NWU mounted their biggest threat in the top of the 5th inning as they had runners on second and third with just one out but failed to score. A strikeout and ground out ended the inning and the Prairie Wolves never threatened again.
Marisa Garver was the hard luck loser on the mound for NWU as she allowed just one run on six hits with four strikeouts.
Briar Cliff jumped ahead quick in the second game as they plated three runs in the 1st inning. A pair of doubles and a single brought in three for the Chargers. BCU added another run in the 2nd inning to go ahead 4-0.
The Prairie Wolves got their only run of the doubleheader in the 3rd inning as
Nicole Vana singled and advanced two bases on an error. She then scored on a single by
Rachel Kubik. That would be all NWU could muster up.
BCU added one run in the bottom of the inning and another in the 4th to go ahead 6-1.
NWU had multiple base runners in the 5th and 6th innings but could not drive in any runs.
Megan Cottier took the loss allowing five runs in three innings of work.
Nicole Vana and
Madi Francis both had two hits to lead the NWU offense.
The Prairie Wolves, who have clinched a spot in the GPAC Postseason Tournament, will close out the regular season on Saturday as they host Dordt College on Senior Day.
