LINCOLN, Neb. -- An 8-0 lead was not big enough for Nebraska Wesleyan as Bellevue University scored nine unanswered runs to get a 9-8 extra innings victory as the Bruins completed the sweep in a softball doubleheader on Monday night. The Bruins took the first game of the night 9-0 in six innings.
NWU looked poise to get the victory in the nightcap and end Bellevue's 13-game winning streak. The Prairie Wolves plated three runs in each of the first two innings to go ahead 6-0. NWU used two Bellevue errors to score three unearned runs in the opening frame. In the 2nd inning,
Hunter Bailey reached on an error,
Nicole Vana doubled and
Betsy Reimer drove in a run with a fielders choice.Â
Rachel Kubik then hit a two-run single to bring in two more.
In the bottom of the 4th, the Prairie Wolves got two additional runs as
Jordan Arndt hit a 2-run single over the 1st baseman's head. With the 8-0 lead heading into the top of the 5th, NWU needed just three outs to end the game due to the run rule. Bellevue didn't give up as they scored two runs in the inning to extend the game.
Nebraska Wesleyan still led 8-2 heading to the top of the 7th inning. The first four batters reached base on a walk and three singles. Starting pitcher
LeighAnn Novotny was then taken out for senior
Megan Cottier. She struck out the first batter she faced for the first out of the inning. The next batter reached on a hit by pitch to load the bases. Pinch hitter Courtney Schendt hit a 3-run double to make the score 8-7. Schendt then came around to score on two wild pitches to tie the game.
NWU was retired in order in the bottom of the 7th to send the game to extra innings. Using the international tie-breaker rule Emily Gigax singled to bring in Michaela Miller with the go-ahead run.
Needing one run to tie the game in the bottom of the 8th, all three NWU batters struck out to give the Bruins the come from behind victory.
NWU finished with nine hits led by
Nicole Vana who was 3-5.Â
Rachel Kubik was 2-4 with two RBI and Arndt also drove in two.
Bellevue pounded out 10 hits, including two home runs and scored five unearned runs in the frist game for the 9-0 win in six innings.
Ashley Gigax was a perfect 3-3 with two HR's and four RBI in the game for the Bruins.
NWU had just four hits in the opening game as they were shutout for the second consecutive game.
