Sweep Of Concordia Puts NWU Softball in 2nd Place

SEWARD, Neb. -- A doubleheader sweep on the road over Concordia put the Nebraska Wesleyan softball team into a tie for second place in the Great Plains Athletic Conference standings with six games remaining.  NWU won game one, 5-4, then took the nightcap 11-2 in five innings.

The Prairie Wolves improve to 17-15 overall and 10-4 in GPAC play to sit in a tie with Hastings College.

Rachel Kubik hit an RBI double in the top of the 1st inning to get the night started for the Prairie Wolves.  Concordia came back with a run in the bottom of the inning to tie the contest.

In the 3rd inning, Betsy Reimer and Madi Francis both singled then came around to score on a 2-run hit by Brittany Gentry.  The Prairie Wolves extended their lead to 4-1 with a run in the 5th.  Kubik doubled to lead off then scored on a squeez bunt by Francis.  The Bulldogs pulled within 4-2 with a run in the bottom of the 5th.  Nicole Vana hit a sac fly in the 6th inning to give NWU a 5-2 advantage.

With two outs in the 7th inning, Concordia hit a 2-run home run to cut the lead to 5-4.  A hit batter put the tying run on 1st base, but a ground out ended the game.

Marisa Garver got the complete game victory allowing two earned runs and six hits in seven innings.

NWU had three players with two hits in the contest as Kubik, Francis and Gentry all had multiple hit games.

A pair of 2-run home runs from Madison Ethen highlighted the Prairie Wolves victory in game two.  Ethen's first two-run home run came in the top of the 2nd as the Prairie Wolves scored four runs.  Betsy Reimer and Rachel Kubik also had RBI singles in the inning.

In Ethen's next at-bat in the 3rd inning she blasted another 2-run home run driving in Brittany Gentry who had doubled in the previous at-bat.

NWU put the game out of reach in the 5th inning with five runs.  Nicole Belfiore had a pinch-hit 2-run double to begin the inning.  Then four straight walks allowed three additional runs to come in and give the Prairie Wolves the win in just five innings.

For Ethen, it was her first two home runs of her career at NWU and just the third and fourth home runs of the season for the Prairie Wolves.  Brittany Gentry was 2-3 with two doubles and three runs scored.  Betsy Reimer also had two hits in the game.

Garver pitched game two as well for the Prairie Wolves to get the win and improve to 8-5.  She allowed just three hits and one earned run.
