NWU Baseball Goes 1-3 on the Weekend

SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- Nebraska Wesleyan split a doubleheader at Dakota Wesleyan on Saturday then dropped a pair of games to GPAC leading Briar Cliff University on Sunday as the Prairie Wolves baseball team had their first losing conference weekend of the year.

On Saturday, NWU lost 6-1 to Dakota Wesleyan then bounced back to blow out the Tigers 14-3 in the second game.  Sunday the Prairie Wolves lost a pair of two-run games to the Chargers falling 5-3 in the opener and a disappointing 13-11 loss to close the weekend.

To open the weekend in Mitchell, S.D., the Prairie Wolves grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first game.  Chase Powers drove in Colby McPike with a single in the top of the 2nd inning to get the early lead.  The Tigers then scored four runs in the 3rd and two more in the 4th to go up 6-1.

DWU pitcher Joey Fitzgerald controlled the NWU bats the rest of the way as he struck out 12 in seven innings.  The Prairie Wolves did collect 10 hits, all singles, but left nine runners on base.  Matt Schommer took the loss for NWU allowing six runs and nine hits in six innings.

Game two was a very competitive game until the 8th inning as the Prairie Wolves scored 10 runs in the inning on just five hits.  That allowed the game to end after eight innings due to the run rule.

Mark Korsakas opened the 8th with a 2-run home run, his first of two HR's in the same inning.  He had another two-run blast later in the inning.

DWU used five different pitchers in the inning as they walked five batters, hit two batters and committed one error.  Besides Korsakas two home runs, Ben Oliver hit a 2-run double for the other big hit of the inning.

The Prairie Wolves finished with 13 hits in the game.  Korsakas was 2-5 with four RBI, while John Estudillo went 2-4 with two RBI and Oliver was 2-3 with three RBI.

Jordyn Johnson got the victory for the Prairie Wolves pitching 6 1/3 innings allowing just four hits and two earned runs.  He struck out six batters with three walks.  Shane Watteyne pitched the final 1 2/3 innings allowing just one hit and no runs.

Facing GPAC leading Briar Cliff on Sunday in Sioux City, the Prairie Wolves out hit the Chargers nine to seven in the first game but couldn't get the big hit.

Trailing 1-0, NWU took a 2-1 lead in the top of the 4th inning.  Joe Babic hit a 2-run HR for his first home run of the year.  BCU came back to score two runs in the bottom of the inning then extended the lead with two more runs in the 5th.

Chase Powers hit a solo HR in the top of the 6th inning, but that would be the last run of the game for the Prairie Wolves.  Dalton Hegeholz and Connor Bool both had two hits to lead the NWU offense.

Nolan Lott took the loss on the mound giving up four earned runs and seven hits in six innings.

NWU led 9-3 heading into the bottom of the 5th inning but couldn't hold on to get the split.

Powers got the Prairie Wolves on the board first as he hit a 2-run single in a three run top of the 2nd inning as NWU came back to tie the game.  NWU then took the lead with two runs in the 3rd inning.  Colby McPike hit a 2-run HR to give the Prairie Wolves the advantage.

In the top of the 5th, Justus Stocks hit a 3-run home run for his first career home run.  Powers added an RBI single as the Prairie Wolves led 9-3.

Briar Cliff scored four runs in the bottom of the inning and knocked out starting pitcher Jordan Haas.  NWU extended their lead to 10-7 as Powers got another RBI single in the 6th inning.  They went up 11-7 in the 7th inning as Jordan Watteyne walked with the bases loaded.

The Chargers scored one run in the bottom of the 7th to make the score 11-8.  BCU then mounted a comeback scoring five runs, all with two outs in the inning.

Chase Powers finished the game 3-5 with four RBI to pace the Prairie Wolves.  Matt Orozco was 3-6, while Justus Stocks and Colby McPike both had two hits.
