YANKTON, S.D. -- Nebraska Wesleyan picked up a 4-3 extra innings victory over Mount Marty College in game one of a GPAC softball doubleheader on Saturday. The Lancers came back to win game two, 5-0, as the Prairie Wolves had their winning streak snapped at six games.
NWU led 3-0 heading into the bottom of the 7th inning of the first contest. The Lancers got a double followed up with a two-run double to make it a one-run game. Mt Marty then tied the game on a single and had the winning run on third base.Â
LeighAnn Novotny came in to pitch for the Prairie Wolves and got two fly outs to end the threat and send the game to extra innings.
To begin the 8th,
Madi Francis reached on a fielder's choice and stole send. She then came around to score as
Brittany Gentry reached on an error. Novotny retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning to clinch the win.
Seven different NWU players recorded a hit in the game.Â
Rachel Kubik hit a solo home run and
Sally Homan had a pinch hit double for the extra base hits. Novotny got the win on the mound pitching the final 1 2/3 innings.
In game two, Mount Marty went ahead 2-0 in the first inning and NWU never got their offense going with just five hits in the game.Â
Kassie Knauss and
Rachel Kubik both had two hits, while
Brittany Gentry added the other hit of the game for the Prairie Wolves.Â
Megan Cottier took the loss allowing five runs and five hits in four innings.
NWU dropped to third place in the GPAC standings with a 8-4 conference record. The Prairie Wolves are 15-13 overall and will host Bellevue University on Monday at University Place Park.
