LINCOLN, Neb. -- A 12-hit outburst in game one gave Nebraska Wesleyan a 7-2 win over Presentation College then a late inning rally came up just short as the Prairie Wolves fell 6-5 in game two of a softball doubleheader on Monday night (Mar. 30) at University Place Park.
With the win in game one, NWU extended their winning streak to seven games. The Prairie Wolves jumped out quick with two runs in the first inning.Â
Madi Francis hit an RBI single and Mady Ethen grounded out to bring in
Rachel Kubik.
Two more runs were added in the 3rd inning as
Betsy Reimer got an infield RBI single and
Jordan Arndt got a single up the middle for another RBI. Presentation took advantage of an NWU error to score two runs in the top of the 4th inning and cut the lead to 4-2.
The Saints (9-17) would get no closer as the Prairie Wolves scored two runs in the 5th and another in the 6th inning.
As a team the Prairie Wolves (8-10) had 12 total hits with eight players collecting hits.Â
Rachel Kubik was a perfect 2-2 with two doubles and an RBI.Â
Jordan Arndt was 3-3 with an RBI and
Madi Francis was 2-4 with two RBI.
In game two, Presentation had a big offensive output in the top of the 3rd inning. The Saints had five consecutive hits including a triple and double as five runs came across. NWU got one run back in the bottom of the inning as
Kassie Knauss and
Nicole Belfiore hit back-to-back doubles. PC would go up 6-1 heading into the 7th inning.
NWU was poised to make a last inning rally and looked like they would accomplish the feat. Knauss doubled to lead off then Brittni Eitmann walked and
Hunter Bailey was hit by a pitch to load the bases.Â
Nicole Vana hit a ground ball to the shortstop but her throw home was dropped by the catcher allowing Knauss to score. The next batter
Brittany Gentry hit a rocket down the left field line for a double to bring in two runs. With runners on 2nd and 3rd with no out trailing 6-4, NWU's top hitter
Rachel Kubik came to the plate. Relief pitcher Nicole Reynolds came in an got Kubik to swing at the first pitch grounding to the shortstop. Vana attempted to score at home but was thrown out for the first out.Â
Madi Francis singled to drive in Gentry and cut the lead to 6-5. That was as close as the Prairie Wolves could get as pinch hitter
Danielle Adams struck out and Knauss hit a fielder's choice to third base to end the game.
Knauss led the NWU attack going 2-4 with two doubles. Francis was 2-4 with an RBI and Gentry drove in two runs.
