CRETE, Neb. -- Nebraska Wesleyan got a two-run 2nd inning and held on for a 5-2 victory in game two of a GPAC softball doubleheader at rival Doane College on Wednesday afternoon. It was the first conference loss of the year for Doane, who was receiving votes in the NAIA poll. The Tigers defeated the Prairie Wolves 7-2 in the first game of the day as the teams split the series.
NWU (9-11, 2-2 GPAC) opened the 2nd inning with a walk and stolen base from
Jordan Arndt. She scored on the next at-bat as
Brittany Gentry hit an RBI double. Gentry would come around to score on a single to center field by
Hunter Bailey. That put the Prairie Wolves ahead 2-1 and they never trailed again.
In the 3rd inning the Prairie Wolves used an error and wild pitch to score an additional run. NWU added one more run in the top of the 5th inning as
Betsy Reimer led off with a walk and scored on a single by
Madi Francis. After Doane cut the lead in half at 4-2 with a run in the bottom of the inning, NWU added another insurance run in the 6th.Â
Betsy Reimer hit an RBI double to drive in
Nicole Belfiore.
Doane threatened in the bottom of the 7th inning as they had two runners on with one out, but
Megan Cottier retired the final two batters to get the win. Cottier pitched all seven innings allowing two earned runs on nine hits.
Brittany Gentry led the NWU offense with two hits including a double and RBI.Â
Betsy Reimer was 1-3 with an RBI double. The Prairie Wolves had five total hits.
Doane jumped ahead 3-0 after three innings of game one and NWU was not able to recover. The Prairie Wolves finally got on the board as
Madi Francis got a single and scored in the top of the 4th inning.Â
Jordan Arndt drove in Francis with an infield single.
The Tigers added two runs in each of the 4th and 5th innings to make the lead too much to overcome. NWU did get a run in the 7th as Arndt scored on an error but the Prairie Wolves left two runners on to end the game.
Arndt was a perfect 3-3 at the plate and stole two bases to lead the Prairie Wolves.Â
Betsy Reimer was 2-3 as NWU finished with six hits.
