SPRINGDALE, Ark. - The Nebraska Wesleyan University softball team began their spring break trip with two victories in Arkansas on Tuesday afternoon (Mar. 24). The Prairie Wolves defeated Ecclesia College, 2-0, then beat Central Baptist College, 5-3 in Springdale, Arkansas.
NWU (3-9) got a no-hitter from
LeighAnn Novotny on the mound. The freshman was just two batters away from a perfect game as she hit one batter and NWU committed an error. Novotny struck out three and did not walk a batter as only one Ecclesia player got to second base. She improves to 1-1 overall on the season.
The Prairie Wolves had only three hits of their own but were able to manufacture two runs. In the top of the 1st inning,
Nicole Vana led off with a walk and came around to score on an error. The other NWU run came in the 5th inning as Vana hit an RBI single to drive in
Hunter Bailey.
NWU was led by
Madi Francis who was 2-3 at the plate with a double and two stolen bases.Â
Nicole Vana had the other hit and also stole two bases in the game.
Next up was a game against Central Baptist College as NWU went for their first 2-game winning streak of the year. The Prairie Wolves struck first with two runs in the bottom of the 1st inning.Â

Rachel Kubik.
CBC responded with a run in the 2nd inning and two more in the 3rd inning to take a 3-2 lead. NWU finally tied the game in the 5th inning as
Kassie Knauss had a bases loaded RBI single. The Prairie Wolves went ahead for good in the bottom of the 6th as
Brittany Gentry drove in the go-ahead run with a single. An insurance run came in with
Betsy Reimer scoring on an error.
NWU finished with eight hits in the game as
Rachel Kubik and
Kassie Knauss both went 2-4. All eight of the Prairie Wolves hits were singles.
Megan Cottier came in to pitch the final three innings to earn her first win of the year. She allowed just two hits and no runs in her appearance.
NWU continues their spring break trip with doubleheaders against University of the Ozarks and Hendrix College.
