Early Goals Give NWU Women 2-0 Victory

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Two goals in the first 21 minutes of the first half were all the Nebraska Wesleyan University women needed as the Prairie Wolves defeated Northwestern College, 2-0, on Saturday night at Abel Stadium.

The Prairie Wolves improve to 2-1 in the GPAC and 5-4 overall as they have now won two straight conference matches.  Northwestern remains winless in league play at 0-1-2 and 3-4-3 on the year.

"I am immensely proud of the team for the way they started," Coach Flintham said. "We moved the ball well, combined quickly and simply and managed to play every one of our healthy players. The result was a real testament to our depth."

Georgia Straka got the scoring started for the Prairie Wolves as she found the open net at the 8:26 mark.  It was the second straight game that Straka has scored a goal for NWU as she made the game-winner at Midland on Monday.

The Prairie Wolves added an insurance goal later in the half as Katelin Blosser kicked the ball in the unattended net.  After a blocked shot attempt, Blosser got the ball away from the goalkeeper and had an open look that she converted.

"It also feels great to say we have a good understanding of two systems of play now," Flintham added. "It's going to make us a real challenge to play against knowing that teams won't know how to prepare. This give us a dangerous plan B."

In the second half, Northwestern controlled the ball on their side of the field but were not able to get any goals.  NWU goalkeeper Madi Francis posted another shutout with two saves.

NWU finished with seven total shots, all in the first half.

"We'll have a big challenge on Wednesday, College of Saint Mary is a class outfit and will be one of the teams competing for a top spot in the conference with us," Flintham concluded.

The Prairie Wolves host CSM on Wednesday at Abel Stadium.
