LINCOLN, Neb. -- Snyder Arena magic continued for the Nebraska Wesleyan men's basketball team against Dordt College as the Prairie Wolves went into overtime to win a thrilling 120-113 contest over the Defenders in GPAC men's basketball action Saturday afternoon.
It was the fifth time in the past six years that NWU defeated Dordt in Lincoln. The Prairie Wolves have now won four straight games to improve to 6-8 overall and 3-6 in GPAC play, while Dordt falls to 13-6, 5-5 GPAC.
Nebraska Wesleyan trailed by six points with just under one minute to play in regulation.Â
Travis Giesselmann made a quick driving layup to pull within four points at 95-91. Dordt went 1-2 at the free throw line to go up five then
Trey Bardsley answered with a layup to make the score 96-93. Once again the Defenders went to the line with 0:19 seconds left an d went 1-2 at the stripe to hold a four-point advantage. Bardsley was fouled on a 3-point attempt the next time down and calmly nailed all three attempts to pull within one point. Once again Nathan Rindels went to the strip and made 1-2 to make the score 98-96 with 0:09 left.
Bardsley drove the length of the floor and got past his defender to hit a layup with 3.3 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game. Dordt did not get a shot off as the game went to overtime.
The high scoring affair continued in overtime as the teams traded baskets before the Prairie Wolves got up by seven points after a pair of free throws from
Nick Stine. Leading by six with under 30 seconds remaining, Stine put the exclamation point on the win with a slam dunk to make it an 8-point game.
Travis Giesselman had a huge game to lead the Prairie Wolves. Giesselmann had a career-high 37 points going 15-20 from the field and 3-5 from 3-point range. Giesslemann was hard for Dordt to stop as he made numerous drives to the basket. He had 20 points in the first half and went on for 37, the most by a NWU player in a GPAC game since 2001.Â
Trey Bardsley finished with 24 points after being held scoreless in the first half. Bardsley had a team-high seven assists and was 8-10 at the free throw line hitting the final eight he shot.Â
Keithan Karn continued his strong play with 18 points,
Nick Stine scored 11 and
Byron Thompson had 10 points.
As a team, the Prairie Wolves shot 56.2 percent from the field and went 10-26 from 3-point range. They were 28-38 at the free throw line, making 12-14 in the overtime period.
For Dordt, guard Nathan Rindels had a huge game to lead the way. Rindels finished with 43 points, one shy of the most ever for a NWU opponent. He was 12-20 from the field and an amazing 18-21 at the free throw line, with two of those misses in the final minute of the game. In the paint, Leighton Sampson came off the bench to score 33 points on 13-19 shooting as the Prairie Wolves didn't have an answer inside.
Dordt shot just below NWU with a percentage of 56.1, making 35-48 at the free throw line. 64 of the Defender points came in the paint, with 35 more at the free throw line.
NWU will look to extend their winning streak to five games on Wednesday when they host rival Doane College in GPAC action.
