This week, to celebrate the Nebraska Wesleyan-Doane 100th football game in the long-standing rivalry, the schools athletic websites will feature the Top 10 games between the two programs. Each school selected five that stood out among the first 99 games played. One game for each school will be released each day this week with the top game being released on Friday.
On Saturday in Crete, the two teams will hook-up for the 100th time with Doane holding the smallest of leads in the all-time series, 47-46-6. Kickoff between the Prairie Wolves and Tigers is set for 1 pm at Al Papik Field.
Nebraska Wesleyan – No. 4 (1976, NWU 26-13)Not defeating Doane in the previous 10 contests, Nebraska Wesleyan finally got their rivals number with a 26-13 victory at NWU's Magee Stadium. The Tigers scored the first 13 points of the game as they led 13-0 at the end of the first quarter and still led 13-7 at halftime. It was all Byron Stallworth and the Nebraska Wesleyan offense from there as they outscored Doane 19-0 in the second half. Stallworth carried the ball 47 times for 265 yards with two touchdowns against the Tiger defense that came into the game ranked third in the NAIA in defense. It was the NWU defense that toughened up in the second half as they held Doane to just three first downs and 18 yards rushing.
Doane – No. 4 (1993, Doane 41-14)The Tigers snapped a seven-year losing streak to Nebraska Wesleyan with a 41-14 win on the road in 1993. The Tigers were a Top 10 team and undefeated while NWU entered ranked No. 19 in the NAIA. The Plainsmen scored first, midway through the first quarter. To open the second quarter, Brad McClatchey threw a 73-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Jochum to tie the game. Ryan Specht's 47-yard field goal gave the Tigers the lead, one they would not surrender. McClatchy followed with a 46 and a 47-yard touchdown pass to give Doane a commanding lead. Doane led 27-7 following a 43-yard field goal by Specht heading into the half. In the second half, Joe Wilkins scored in the third quarter and McClatchy threw his fourth touchdown pass of the day for the final score. Doane would go on to win the NIAC title with an undefeated regular season, their first since 1972.
