NWU-Doane Release Top 10 All-Time Football Games

LINCOLN, Neb. -- This week, to celebrate the Nebraska Wesleyan-Doane 100th football game in the long-standing rivalry, the schools athletic websites will feature the Top 10 games between the two programs.  Each school selected five that stood out among the first 99 games played.  One game for each school will be released each day this week with the top game being released on Friday.

On Saturday in Crete, the two teams will hook-up for the 100th time with Doane holding the smallest of leads in the all-time series, 47-46-6.  Kickoff between the Prairie Wolves and Tigers is set for 1 pm at Al Papik Field.

Nebraska Wesleyan – No. 5 (1989, NWU 31-10)

The two remaining unbeaten football teams in the NIAC met for the conference lead in a showdown in Crete.  NWU, ranked No. 12 in NAIA Division II, took on the Tigers who were coming off an upset of the No. 6 team in the country.  With a burned "W" on Doane's home field, the Plainsmen dominated the Tigers in every phase of the game.  Gary Fate threw four touchdown passes for 272 yards completing passes to 10 different receivers.  The NWU defense shut down the Doane offense, not allowing them into the end zone until their final drive of the game.  Nebraska Wesleyan's victory propelled them to an undefeated conference championship season and a trip to the National Playoffs.

Doane – No. 5 (1942, Doane 14-3)

The Tigers were outweighed by 10 pounds per man on the line and Wesleyan kept the ball in Tiger territory for most of the game according to the Crete News in 1942. Doane trailed 3-0 at halftime.  The first scoring drive for Doane featured two big plays as the possession started from the Doane-7.  Frankie Juarez fooled the Wesleyan defense by running from deep punt formation in his end zone and around right end, reversing his field to gallop 53 yards to Wesleyan's 40. Bob Betts, halfback, flipped a 30-yard pass to Boo Grosscup, who made an over-the-shoulder catch on the 8-yard line.  An 8-yard touchdown pass from Lester Razdalovsky put the Tigers ahead as Doane needed only five plays to cover 93 yards. Trailing 7-3 late in the game, Wesleyan threw a deep pass that skimmed through the hands of a Wesleyan player and ended up in Vern Loetterle's hands and he returned it for an 80-yard touchdown as Doane won 14-3.  Loetterle had an 80-yard interception for a touchdown in 1941 as well.  Doane would earn a share of the NCAC title in 1942, their first year under Head Coach Jim Dutcher.
