Orange City, Iowa -- Nebraska Wesleyan overcame a double-digit second half deficit to tie the game in the final three minutes, but in the end Northwestern proved to be too much as the Red Raiders defeated the Prairie Wolves 109-102 in GPAC men's basketball action.
Paul Newby hit a 3-pointer at the 2:41 mark to tie the game at 93-93 after the Prairie Wolves trailed 83-72 with just under eight minutes remaining. Northwestern answered with a basket on their next possession to go ahead by two and NWU never could get closer.
The key sequence of events came on Northwestern's next offensive possession. The Red Raiders missed a pair of free throws, but two offensive rebounds gave the Red Raiders three chances and they took advantage with a layup from Levi Ettleman. NWU had another chance late in the game as
Nick Stine made a 3-pointer to make the score 103-98 with 0:49 remaining. The Red Raiders turned the ball over and Stine had a good look at a 3-pointer that came up short and Northwestern got the rebound to seal the victory.
Nebraska Wesleyan went over the 100 point mark for the fourth time this season despite shooting 34.8 percent from the floor. The big reason for the high point total was the Prairie Wolves dominance on the offensive glass. NWU pulled down a total of 31 offensive rebounds against a Northwestern team that was in the top five in the nation in rebounding.
