LINCOLN, Neb. -- Dakota Wesleyan began the second half on a 32-5 run to break open a tied game at halftime as the Tigers remained undefeated on the season with a 125-88 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan in the GPAC men's basketball opener on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 22) at Snyder Arena.
The Tigers (8-0, 1-0 GPAC) outscored the Prairie Wolves 66-29 in the second half marking the second straight game that NWU was ahead or tied at halftime then lost by double digits.
NWU (0-3, 0-1 GPAC) had their run and gun style running on all cylinders in the first half as the Prairie Wolves were on fire from the field. NWU hit 10-19 from 3-point range in the first half and shot 57.1 percent as a team in the first 20 minutes.Â
Trey Bardsley had 21 first half points for NWU as he was 5-8 from 3-point range. DWU did lead by as many as seven points in the first half as they shot 58.3 percent from the floor and went 12-13 at the free throw line.
To start the second half, NWU was ice cold from the field and Dakota Wesleyan couldn't miss. The Tigers scored the first seven points of the half before
Blake Ruiz hit a layup for NWU making the score 66-61. From there, the Tigers went on a 25-3 run over the next six minutes as Dakota Wesleyan led 91-64 before the Prairie Wolves knew what hit them. NWU never was able to recover and couldn't get their offense on track.
In the second half, Nebraska Wesleyan shot just 21.2 percent in the second half going 2-16 from 3-point range. The Prairie Wolves also committed 10 second half turnovers. For Dakota Wesleyan, they were scorching hot in the second half hitting 23-34 for 67.6 percent from the field and 66.7 from 3-point range.
Dakota Wesleyan had three different players score over 30 points in the game. Trae Bergh led the way with 32 points hitting 7-10 from 3-point range. Jalen Voss had 30 points and nine rebounds, while Kris Menning had 30 points, nine assists and seven rebounds. That trio of players outscored the Prairie Wolves 92-88.
Nebraska Wesleyan was led by
Trey Bardsley who finished with 24 points. Bardsley made a career-high six 3-pointers.Â
Byron Thompson also hit double figures with 14 points hitting 9-10 at the free throw line.
NWU will now have a week off before hosting the 26th Snyder Classic on Thanksgiving weekend.
