Colorado Springs, Colo. -- Five extra minutes were needed to decide the winner in the 2014-15 season opener for the Nebraska Wesleyan University women and in the end the Prairie Wolves came up just short as St. Lawrence edged NWU 88-85 in overtime at the Colorado College Tip-Off Classic.
NWU was held without a point the final 2:36 of the overtime period as they went 0-4 on field goal attempts with a turnover to allow St. Lawrence to earn the three point win.
Emma Neal made a free throw to pull NWU within one point 86-85 at the 2:36 mark. SLU hit just two free throws the rest of the way, but NWU did not score a point as they couldn't pull out the opening season victory.
Courtney Cook hit a layup with less than 40 seconds remaining in regulation to give NWU a two-point advantage. On the next possession for SLU, they missed the game-tying shot and the Prairie Wolves pulled down the rebound. An immediate foul sent Neal to the free throw line where she missed the front end of a one and one to give SLU the ball back. Cara Waterson missed a shot with :07 remaining but they pulled down the offensive rebound. As the buzzer was nearing a defensive foul was called on Neal sending Kara McDuffee to the line for two free throws. McDuffee made both free throw attempts with 0:01 left to tie the game and send to overtime.
Nebraska Wesleyan closed the first half on a 9-2 run to hold a 48-38 advantage at halftime. They continued to build up the lead and go the advantage to 19 points with 8:47 remaining when they led 67-49. Over the next five minutes, St. Lawrence went on a 14-3 run to pull within seven points. NWU made just two field goals during a six minute stretch as SLU overtook NWU 74-73 with 1:37 to play.Â
Emma Neal hit a 3-pointer on the next possession to put the Prairie Wolves back up with just over 1:00 left. SLU nailed two free throws then Cook made layup to keep game tied before McDuffee's game-tying free throws.
Four players scored in double figures for the Prairie Wolves who shot 41.1 percent from the floor and hit 10-29 from 3-point range.Â
Felicia TeKolste led the way with 18 points and five assists. Neal scored 17 points hitting 4-5 from 3-point range while leading the team with eight rebounds.Â
Courtney Cook didn't miss a shot going 5-5 from the field and 3-3 at the free throw line to score 14 points with
Kelly Sanchez adding 11 points.
