SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- The 14th-ranked Nebraska Wesleyan volleyball team took the first two sets and fought off a Morningside rally to win the deciding fifth set as the Prairie Wolves defeated the Mustangs, 3-2, in the regular season finale Saturday night (Nov. 1) at Allee Gym in Sioux City.
NWU defeated Morningside by scores of 25-22, 25-14, 25-27, 25-27, 15-8. With the win, the Prairie Wolves finish the 2014 regular season at 22-6 overall and 10-6 in GPAC play.
The Prairie Wolves had solid performances in the first two sets and looked as if they would cruise to a quick net to finish the season sweep of the Mustangs. However, Morningside had different plans and took the nationally-ranked Prairie Wolves to five sets.
Nebraska Wesleyan fought off two different set points in the third set, but Morningside finally got the 27-25 win on a set error by
Kelsey Bahe. The fourth set was also extended past 25 as NWU fended off two set points once again.
Heather Muller got a kill to make the score 24-24 and an attack error by the Mustangs made the score 25-25, before they got two straight kills to earn the win.
In the deciding fifth set, the Prairie Wolves took a 4-3 lead and never trailed again. With the score 9-7, NWU outscored the Mustangs 6-1 to earn the win as the Prairie Wolves had five kills during that stretch.
Katelyn Walsh led NWU with 19 kills and a .349 hitting percentage. Walsh also had nine digs with two block assists. Three other players were in double figures in kills for the Prairie Wolves as
Malory Dahl had 15 with
Alyssa Stanek and
Alexa Rosenau getting 10 each. Rosenau had a double-double of 32 assists, 10-digs while
Kelsey Bahe also had a double-double of 25 assists, 12 digs.
NWU will now have a week off before awaiting the announcement of the 2014 NCAA III Tournament field. The NCAA selection show will be Nov. 10 with regionals taking place Nov. 14-16.
