LINCOLN, Neb. -- Long-time rivals Nebraska Wesleyan and Doane will meet for the 100th time in football this Saturday (Oct. 4) as the conference foes are set for a GPAC football showdown at Al Papik Field in Crete, Neb. Kickoff between the Prairie Wolves and Tigers is set for 1 pm.
In one of the greatest rivalries in small college football, NWU and Doane have played 99 times in football with Doane holding a slight 1-game advantage in the series that was first played in 1896. Nebraska Wesleyan will look to even the all-time series this week as well as get back to .500 in GPAC play.
The Prairie Wolves (1-3, 1-2 GPAC) have suffered three losses on the season, all to teams that are currently ranked in the top 15 in the NAIA Top 25. NWU came up just short last Saturday with a 8-0 loss to 16th-ranked Northwestern at home in Abel Stadium. One big play gave the Red Raiders their only score, but the NWU offense could not get the ball in the end zone.
Doane College (2-2, 2-1 GPAC) lost their first two games of the season, but has since posted wins over Hastings and Midland. In both victories, the Tigers had to mount 2nd half comebacks, including a 28-point 3rd quarter last week at Midland. This Saturday is Homecoming for the Tigers when they host the Prairie Wolves.
Leading up to this historic game in the all-time series, both schools are selecting the Top 10 all-time games in series history with each program selecting five games that rank among the best. On Saturday, the NWU-Doane All-Time Team will be announced on the field before kickoff as each program selected 24 players based on their performance in the NWU-Doane rivalry games.
