Box Score Nebraska Wesleyan scored 24 second half points after leading just 7-0 at halftime and went on to pick up their first victory of the season with a 31-7 win over Briar Cliff University on Homecoming Saturday (Sept. 21) at Abel Stadium in Lincoln.
Dustin Bryant rushed for 115 yards and two touchdowns as the Prairie Wolves had 436 yards of total offense in the game. BCU prevented the shutout as they scored a touchdown on their final drive against NWU reserves.
Nebraska Wesleyan got the first score of the game on a 7-yard TD run from Bryant with 0:05 remaining the first quarter. That would be the lone score of the first half as both defenses took control with the NWU defense limiting BCU to only 81 yards in the first half.
On the second possession of the second half,
Tyler Francis threw his first TD pass of the season hitting
Brooks Erhart from four yard. NWU threatened on two other third quarter possessions, but lost the ball on turnovers making the score 14-0 at the end of the third quarter.
The Prairie Wolves finally scored on the second play of the fourth quarter, as
Aaron Lorraine connected on a career long 46-yard field goal to remain perfect on the season.
That was the first of three straight scoring drives for the Prairie Wolves. Bryant had his longest run of the year going 41 yards down to the one-yard line. He then plunged ahead on the next play for his second TD of the year.
Joey Jones took over on the next possession accounting for 41 rushing yards highlighted by a 14-yard TD run where he broke several tackles to score his first TD in an NWU uniform.
NWU finished the game with 436 yards of total offense, 177 on the ground and 259 through the air. Besides Bryant's second 100-yard game of the year,
Joey Jones added 65 yards on 15 carries. Francis finished the game 23-32 for 218 yards with a TD and an interception.
A total of 11 different receivers caught passes for the Prairie Wolves led by
Brooks Erhart with five receptions and
Connor Zumpfe had four for 61 yards.
Briar Cliff finished with 252 total yards, 90 of which came on the final drive of the game. The Chargers had 82 yards rushing on 34 attempts and were 15-34 through the air.
Aaron Baney led the Prairie Wolves defense with nine tackles.
Brandon Reeves had eight stops, two tackles-for-loss and an interception.
