Box Score It was an exciting finish to the 2013 men's soccer season for Nebraska Wesleyan as they earned a shootout victory over Illinois Institute of Technology in the Provision Independent Tournament Championship Saturday night (Nov. 9) in Chicago, Ill.
With the season not going exactly as planned for the Prairie Wolves, the thrilling finish gives the team a great feeling to close the year for the seniors and head to the offseason.
The match tied 1-1 after two overtime periods which sent the match into a shootout. IIT was first to go attempt the shootout and converted two of the five as
Turner Mead stopped three shots.
NWU had successful shots from
Zach Lind,
Wesley Smith and the game-winner from
Stephen Boakye to earn the 3-2 shootout victory.
Boakye had the lone goal in regulation for the Prairie Wolves as he scored in the 11th minute to make the score 1-0. Illinois Tech answered with a goal just 10 seconds later to tie the match. Neither team would score the rest of the way.
Illinois Tech had 30 total shots in the match as Mead recorded 11 total saves, while NWU attempted 13 total shots.
