Butch McLaren is in his third full season as head softball coach at Nebraska Wesleyan University. He was named the head softball coach at Nebraska Wesleyan in May 2012 after serving as the interim head coach for the final 26 games of the 2012 season, replacing Lance Kingery who resigned after 10 games. He has compiled a 44-54 overall record as the head coach at NWU.
Last season, McLaren guided the Prairie Wolves to a 14-22 overall mark and a 5-15 record in the GPAC. He had a player earn 1st-Team All-GPAC recognition, the third straight season one of his player was 1st-Team All-Conference.
In his first full season as head coach of the Prairie Wolves, McLaren guided the team to a 17-19 overall and 10-10 mark in the GPAC. He led the team to the GPAC Postseason Tournament where they earned one tournament win.
As interim coach in 2012, McLaren guided the Prairie Wolves to a 13-13 record in his 26 games. He had two players earn CoSIDA Academic All-America honors.
McLaren had served as an assistant softball coach at Nebraska Wesleyan for the previous 10 seasons. McLaren, who joined the staff in August 2001, worked extensively with the pitching staff. He has coached the two winningest pitchers in NWU history during his tenure, including the 2010 GPAC Pitcher-of-the-Year Alysia Wittmaack who holds 10 NWU school records.
McLaren is currently teaching seventh, eighth, and ninth grade business and keyboarding classes at Goodrich Middle School in Lincoln. He also was the head softball coach at Lincoln East High School from 2003-11.
Before moving to Nebraska, McLaren lived in Mesa, Ariz., where he coached high school softball for seven years, as well as high school football and wrestling. He graduated from Northern Arizona University in 1993 with a degree in secondary education. While in college, he played baseball for four years and football for two.
