Crete, NE – The Nebraska Wesleyan women's soccer team opened its season with a 2-1 victory over Doane University on Wednesday night.

The Prairie Wolves (1-0-0) took the lead in the 13th minute when junior Hannah Churchill scored on a shot from well outside the box that found the back of the net. Doane (0-4-1) answered in the 25th minute as Anali Astorga scored the equalizer, sending the match into halftime tied 1-1.

The score remained even until the 81st minute, when Emma Parker finished a loose ball in front of the goal following a Churchill corner kick. The goal gave Nebraska Wesleyan a 2-1 lead and proved to be the game-winner.

Nebraska Wesleyan held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks, while Doane recorded 10 shots on goal compared to eight for the Prairie Wolves.

Churchill played a key role in the win, scoring the opening goal and assisting on Parker's game-winning strike. Freshman Shelbee Daffer and senior Averie Hike joined Churchill with a team-high two shots on goal apiece. Goalkeepers Cassidy Hofstetter and Catthi Pham each made four saves.

The Prairie Wolves return home for two matches this weekend, hosting Illinois College on Friday at noon before welcoming Gustavus Adolphus College on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
