Women's Basketball Closes Season with 59-45 Victory Over Dubuque

Dubuque, IA - Nebraska Wesleyan women's basketball closed its season with a 59-45 victory over Dubuque, Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter: Both offenses were clicking early as Dubuque shot 57.14% from the floor in the opening period. Nebraska Wesleyan countered with a blistering attack from Peyton Tritz and Anastyn Pettlon, who combined to make four three pointers while scoring all 16 of NWU's first quarter points. Despite their efforts, Dubuque held a narrow 18-16 lead as the game entered the second quarter.
Second Quarter: The Prairie Wolves continued to roll offensively in the second quarter, with Anastyn Pettlon tying the game at 18, before Carney Black knocked down a three to put NWU ahead 21-18. Dubuque responded with three straight points to even the score at 21. From there, NWU took control allowing just three points over the final 6:45, while Pettlon, Tritz, and Maddie Demke scored 10 points to put the Prairie Wolves up 31-24 at halftime.
Third Quarter: Dubuque came out firing in the opening moments of the second half, scoring nine straight points to steal a 32-31 lead. A Carney Black lay up briefly halted the Spartan's scoring run, but Dubuque quickly retook the lead on their next possession. Black again responded for Nebraska Wesleyan, draining a three, and jump starting an 8-4 run which helped NWU retake a 42-38 advantage as the season entered its final quarter.
Fourth Quarter: Leading by four with just 10 minutes to go in the season, Nebraska Wesleyan needed to dig deep to secure the victory. Dubuque refused to go quietly scoring six of the quarter's first 10 points to pull within two with just 3:30 to play. However, a Peyton Tritz lay up and Carney Black jump shot put some distance between the two teams. Nebraska Wesleyan would continue to pull away over the remaining moments to secure the victory. Maddie Demke was crucial down the stretch, making six free throws to help NWU ice the game.
