Dubuque, IA - Nebraska Wesleyan men's basketball dropped an intense back and forth game to Loras on Saturday. The loss drops NWU to 17-6 and 12-2 in the American Rivers Conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half: Loras held the upper hand early holding a 10-5 lead less than three minutes into the game. However, four points from
Nick Howard, an
Amun-Ra Collins three and a
Christian Winn jump shot gave NWU a 14-10 advantage. From there, NWU strived to grow its lead but Loras fought back to tie the game at 21. Nebraska Wesleyan continued to battle as back to back lay ups from
Seth Newton and
Kason Simpson put the Black and Gold up 25-21. The Prairie Wolves would hold their advantage until the 53 second mark where a pair of free throws put Loras up 31-30. NWU retook a 32-31 lead seconds later as
Amun-Ra Collins sunk two free throws. The score remained 32-31 as the game reached halftime.
Second Half: Loras quickly retook the lead in the second half with a tip in and mid range jump shot before
Nick Howard scored four straight points to give NWU a 36-35 advantage. The two teams would continue to trade leads over the ensuing 10 minutes, with NWU turning to a multitude of players to match the Duhawk attack. During this 10 minute period,
Christian Winn and
Nick Howard each scored five points to lead the charge, while
Amun-Ra Collins,
Devin Holmon, and
Neal Mosser combined for seven points. However with the game tied at 53, Loras embarked on an 8-2 run and grabbed a 61-55 lead with 4:59 to play. Nebraska Wesleyan would get to within three on a
Seth Newton triple, but Loras held off a Prairie Wolf comeback attempt to earn a 72-66 win.
