Mount Vernon, IA - Nebraska Wesleyan women's soccer used an explosive offensive attack in a dominant 7-1 route of Cornell College, Sunday afternoon. The Prairie Wolf offense received contributions from six different players as the team moved to 2-3-2 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half: Averie Hike got the Prairie Wolves going early, scoring a goal just 4:47 into the match. Just seconds later, Hike scored again to put the Black and Gold up 2-0 in the first five minutes. From there the route was on as Emily Abeyta tallied her fourth goal of the season at the 11:40 mark. NWU moved ahead 4-0 on a goal from Nella Castaneda at 15:43. Despite the 4-0 lead, NWU refused to let its foot of the gas, dominating the Rams in shots with a 12-0 margin over the ensuing 27:43. Then at 42:26, Ava Reed polished off a near perfect first half with a goal to put the Black and Gold up 5-0 at halftime.
Second Half: Cornell got itself on the board early in the second half with a 49th minute goal. The Prairie Wolves dashed any hope of a comeback with a Hannah Churchill goal less than a minute later. NWU proceeded to out shoot Cornell 5-3 over the next 30 minutes before Payten Smith made the score 7-1 with a goal in the 82nd minute. Nebraska Wesleyan would keep the sheet clean over the remainder of the game and conclude its trip to Iowa with a 7-1 win.
