LINCOLN, Neb. - Nebraska Wesleyan softball closed out the regular season by splitting a doubleheader with Luther College on Saturday at Sandhills Global Youth Complex. After dropping a heartbreaker 4-3 in the opener, the Prairie Wolves bounced back with a 4-3 victory in the nightcap to secure either the third or fourth seed in next week's American Rivers Conference Tournament.
Game 1: Luther 4, Nebraska Wesleyan 3
In a back-and-forth opener, Nebraska Wesleyan fell just short despite a gritty performance. The Prairie Wolves matched Luther with three runs through five innings before the visitors connected on a solo home run in the sixth that proved to be the difference.
Hanna Roth delivered the offensive highlights for NWU, doubling and driving in two runs. Addi Duranski added a single and scored a run, while the Prairie Wolves played solid defense behind pitcher Elise Warneke, who went the distance while striking out five.
Nebraska Wesleyan tied the game twice, first in the third inning when an error allowed Roth to score, and again in the fifth when Roth delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Eva Fahrnbruch.
Game 2: Nebraska Wesleyan 4, Luther 3
The Prairie Wolves rebounded in the nightcap behind timely hitting and clutch pitching from the duo of Eva Fahrnbruch and Elise Warneke.
Taylor Korecky got things started with a solo home run to left field to tie the game in the third. Later that inning, Hanna Roth delivered another sacrifice fly and a wild pitch brought home Kenzie Heedum to give the Prairie Wolves a 3-1 advantage.
After Luther tied it in the fourth, NWU reclaimed the lead for good in the fifth when Val Gerlach singled to right field, scoring Paige Davison who had doubled earlier in the inning.
Warneke earned her 21st win of the season with three scoreless innings of relief work, allowing just two hits to secure the victory and the weekend split.
With the split, Nebraska Wesleyan improves to 28-11 overall and 10-6 in A-R-C play, finishing the regular season with momentum heading into postseason action.
